Although both Canada and Denmark perform similarly in terms of health outcomes and life expectancy, Danes are generally better satisfied with their care as they age, due to a model of well-being that supports ageing at home.

With an ageing population, Canadian policy makers are just beginning to reorient health and social services to foster integration, focus on prevention, and make better use of technologies to keep people as close to home as possible.

As such, we’re seeing many of Canada’s provinces starting to develop senior’s strategies with plans for senior-friendly communities.

As part of a recent visit from a Danish health delegation to Canada, we met with Dr. Samir Sinha, a Gerontologist and the Provincial Lead for Ontario’s Seniors Strategy. The Senior’s Strategy, highlights the need for Ontario, Canada’s most populous province, to prioritize the use of technologies that enable seniors to receive care in their home or as close to their home, as possible.

Danish possibilities
With up to one million Canadians, 82 procent of which are seniors, receiving homecare in Canada, there are great opportunities for Canada to benefit from Denmark’s experiences in this field.

Ronny Wiskin, Founder of the ReliAble Living Centre in Toronto, which provides accessible products for both residential and commercial uses, states that “Danish companies, such as Pressalit Care, are seen to be champions of accessibility helping to keep people active in their communities by preventing falls and reducing reliance on costly institutional care.”

Denmark’s reputation in this field has served Welfare Tech companies seeking to come to Canada very well, as they generally find an audience that shares similar values and is keen to learn how various products and services can support healthy ageing.
